A Trip Down Memory Lane: My Journey in the Drinks and Retail Industry

It is September 2001, and there I am, feeling on top of the world in my Converse and baggy jeans, which I still pull out on occasion. I am leaning against my trusty 1989 Fiat Tipo, munching on a chocolate bar, and gearing up to start my first job in the wine and spirits industry with Majestic Wine in Oxford.

That car was a real gem. I bought it for £300 in the rain from a furniture polisher, and thanks to him, it smelled incredible inside. It was not much to look at, but it kept me mobile for years. I had no idea back then how significant that moment would become in shaping my career and, to some extent, my life.

So why am I sharing this story now? Well, recently, I stumbled upon my original practice application to Majestic Wine. Looking at the scribbled handwriting and my earnest, slightly naive answers, I felt a wave of pride. Not because it was a brilliant application, but because it reminded me how my core values have stayed with me throughout the years.

Look at some of my responses:

Q: How would you describe yourself?

A: "If something is worth attaining, then I must give it 100% concentration, as I don’t like letting myself down. I set my targets high and subscribe to the ‘glass half full’ adage."

Q: What interests you about this position?

A: "The role would provide satisfaction, as the product being sold offers customers a sense of pleasure. Once knowledgeable, it’s pleasing to think my efforts could enhance that experience."

Looking back, I am proud of my 23-year-old self for writing that. Even now, over two decades later, those principles hold true. I have always believed in setting ambitious standards and finding joy in helping others, especially when it comes to enhancing someone’s experience, whether it is through great products and service, or sound advice.

Over the years, I have been incredibly fortunate to have mentors who guided me when times get tough. They would not want a shout-out, as they are far too humble for that, but they know who they are. I think of them as the "guardrails" at a bowling alley, there to keep me on track, offering support and advice whenever I needed it.

Today, I am still learning. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities, and there is always something new to master. But now, I also find myself in a position where I can give back. If you are just starting out in the drinks or retail industry, or if you are at a point where you are not sure what your next move should be, I am here to help.

Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed by multiple projects, or unsure how to manage "up" in your career? I have been there. Sometimes, all you need is someone who has been down that road before to give you a nudge in the right direction.

So, here is my offer: If you are looking for guidance, someone to be your "guardrail at the bowling alley," feel free to reach out. Whether you are fresh out of school, deep into a career transition, or anywhere in between, I would be happy to lend a hand. And for the parents reading this, if you think your kids could benefit from some advice from someone with a bit of experience (and more than a few grey hairs), do not hesitate to share this with them.

There is no catch here, just a genuine desire to help the next generation of talent in the drinks and retail industry. So, if you think I can be of assistance, drop me a message.

Oh, and if you ever come across a good-condition Fiat Tipo, let me know. That car took me a long way, and it will always have a special place in my memory.
