For those who know me, my lifelong obsession with bikes will not come as a surprise. As I type there are currently two sitting in my living room desperately waiting to be ridden as soon as my leg is fixed. Specialized Bicycle Components, Salsa Cycles
I have watched all the big races in 2024 and screamed at the TV to try and make Tadej Pogačar, the best rider in the world currently (and possibly the greatest of all time), get up big hills quicker than anyone else. I do not think it was my shouting that did it, but more his natural talent and the fact that he looks like he is enjoying more than anyone else.
This is the message I sent my Mum over the weekend (she has to put up with cycling chat from me…) when he won his most recent race in Emilia Romagna in Italy on Saturday. “Tadej Pogačar was on fire again today. He might be 20 years younger than me, but I see him very much as a role model in the way he conducts himself. He does his own thing, doesn’t listen to anyone else if he believes in himself, and if he says he gonna do something he does it. Give it five years and I will sponsor his team”.
Okay, maybe that last part is a stretch, but isn’t there magic in dreaming big? Role models are often older, people we look up to for their wisdom and experience. But sometimes, it is the younger generation who teach us that even middle-aged dogs can learn new tricks.
Happy to hear the Eddie Merckx pile on that he is the greatest cyclist ever and not Tadej :)
